Really really bad thrush – what have you found worked?
Lol, first: yahoo answer fail! Under the “We may have the answer” it has ‘how do I tell my boyfriend I have chlamydia!’
So, for those of you who helped with my geldings lameness issues, thank you! Aside from the thin sole which will predispose him to sole bruises (for which he is now wearing turnout boots until he can grow some more sole), we also discovered a really bad case of deep sulcus thrush. No smell, no visible sign, heels not tender. 2 Vets and 2 Farriers missed it. By chance we discovered it and my trimmer pared off tons of rotting frog….then the smell came out. Urg. So I have been alternating with White lightning soak and Gel (the gel is good to get into all the tunnels inside his frogs). Now though the bit covering the thrush have fallen away and so he has deep crevasses in his heels (if I squirt gel into them, they come out at the bottom of his frogs, poor boy).
He is sound again though and so we have started working him again to get that circulation going, but I am wondering if anyone knows how long this may take to heal and what other things I can be doing to help it. No getting away from the mud here sadly, but we check his boots twice a day, he has ‘out of boot time’, hoofs cleaned (with pick and water) every day and his thrush treatment daily too. He is out at pasture (him and his buddy have a 2 acre field) and is on a grass diet (grazing and hay) with a scoop of grain with vitamins, senior flex and corn oil about 3 times per week.
He still avoids a heel first landing though and I so worried about these holes in his feet never healing….help!
I miss you Rhonda – How much of a syringe of quartermaster do you use per foot? I spoke to my vet and he has had people use it in the past succesfully too (Plus I googled it and loads of people say it is great – who would have thought!). My gelding has all 4 feet infected and I need to know how many I should order! Thank you
