Persistent Thrush, help!?
I’ve been breastfeeding our 3rd baby girl for almost 10 months now, right before 9 months we started showing signs of thrush. I have no clue how it crept up on us in the first place. =P We got Nystatin (oral) for the baby and 4 pills of Diflucan for me, I’ve also been using Gentian Violet and taking Probiotic Acidophilus. Today, over a month after it started I went back to the Dr for more help. Today he prescribed more Diflucan (only 2 pills this time), Amoxicillin (10 day treatment), and Bactroban (for my nipples). I’m confused about him prescribing Amox when that generally causes yeast overgrowth, how is it supposed to get rid of it? And have heard from other moms with experience that so few pills of Diflucan won’t work. Was also told that Threelac is the most effective treatment for thrush in mom but the Dr had never heard of it, he called the Pharmacist and he’d never heard of it either. Mind you this is in the very small town my mom lives (Dr I’ve known since a kid). I’m ready to be done with this thrush!! I guess I’ll need to find another Dr if this doesn’t work. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your answer! Neither the baby nor I have had any problem with vaginal yeast whatsoever. As a matter of fact her problem clears up with one or two doses of oral Nystatin, so apparently it’s me who’s keeping it around. I think I made it worse for myself by using Lanolin to keep my nipples from cracking but didn’t have the chance to get anything different, that’s why he prescribed the Bactroban. Here’s hoping lots of Yogurt will counteract the antibiotic! I don’t think I’m ready for all the garlic stuff but I will definitely keep it in mind if this doesn’t work, thanks!
